Calvin's Testimony

Calvin is a young man in his mid-twenties who came to the Mission's Emergency Service Center. He was very timid and characterized by staff as "afraid of his own shadow." Staff also observed that Calvin avoided opportunities to improve his working and living conditions. Calvin seemed to shy away from those opportunities. As staff cultivated a trust and relationship with Calvin, they learned he feared change.

As Calvin continued to participate in our services, his optimism and confidence improved significantly. Staff encouraged Calvin to pursue his dream of being a long-haul truck driver. Several staff members with truck driving experience persuaded Calvin that he possessed the traits that would lead him to be a successful truck driver and that he should enroll in truck driving school.

Calvin successfully completed the truck-driving course, obtained his license and endorsements to qualify for a job in Utah. The staff frequently receives post cards from Calvin as he travels to different parts of the country. Whenever Calvin is in town, he parks his eighteen-wheeler in front of the shelter, says hello to the staff, and encourages other clients to pursue their dreams.
